“Life isn’t a support system for art; it’s the other way around.”
– Stephen King, On Writing, which audiobook I’m listening to for at least the third time and still finding endlessly useful, compelling, realistic, and, yep, so inspiring. No writer makes me want to work harder than this hard-cursing, page-producing, humane word guy. (via merlin)

A short course on surviving the web:
merlin: indefensible: I don’t know how anybody with a remotely high profile on the internet stops themselves from climbing to the top of a tall building to pick people off with a marksman’s rifle…. […] It’s been a small dirty window to internet fame. Thing is: the internet’s made of IP addresses, opinions, and assholes. It’s what’s there. That’s the basic equipment. A short course on...

THE Q&A: DIETER RAMS, INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER | More... →
Interview with Dieter Rams In the realm of industrial design, Dieter Rams is Yoda. The foundations were laid during a 40-year tenure as design director of Braun, a German electronics manufacturer. Rams helped to usher a functional modernist agenda into households the world over. Some great insights, particularly about design vs art, chaos, and lighting that chaos.

Great story about a food lover who learned in the restaurants because he ultimately wanted to create a charitable food business.  The restaurants he opens, sort of pop up style, contribute a significant amount of their proceeds to food related charities.  Can’t wait to try it next time I’m in the bay area. Happy Coincidence
Jason Kottke wrote about this man making an Enzo Mari EFFE table from Ikea Ivar Shelving.  The next day I was looking through Core77’s gift guide and saw this book that Mari wrote detailing how to make furniture using rough boards and nails.
